A marathon is defined by its running distance of 42.195 kilometres. The ARTMARATHON is defined by its duration of 42 years.
From December 10th 2008 to December 10th 2050, the ARTMARATHON will collaborate with a different artist every year. What will ultimately result is a one-of-a-kind collection of works that reflect the events, issues and people of our time, creating a record of the world in the first half of the twenty-first century through art.
The ARTMARATHON has collaborated with the Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS) and the Michel Bréal Society to celebrate and preserve the legacy of Michel Bréal, the founder of the marathon as a modern sport.
As a result of these efforts, Michel Bréal's tomb at the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris has been fully renovated and will be preserved for future generations. The unveiling ceremony of the restored tomb is to be held on September 15th, launching the global marathon day, which will henceforth be celebrated every year.
This date marks the anniversary of the letter Bréal wrote to Pierre de Coubertin, proposing what became the marathon for the 1896 revival of the ancient Olympic Games.
